KAPLAN
Precise rotating blades for maximum adaptability and toughness
The Kaplan turbine was invented in 1913 by Viktor Kaplan, its unique trait being the ability to automatically change the angle of its blades based on flow rate, making it an exceptionally versatile solution, although getting maximum output in low head applications.
Kaplan Turbines can operate in horizontal and vertical position depending on the situation. They’re considered axial flow runners, since water flows through them axially from the turbine’s rotational axis. The mechanism is quite simple: water enters the turbine from its sides through guiding vanes, which then directs the fluid according to the angle that gives the highest power production efficiency.
Top-tier precision is what makes our turbines stand out; our 3D dimensional report proves it further.
Thanks to our experience and lean model of production we have reached excellent levels of accuracy: the great majority of wheels we balance do not require any additional material removal, thus saving precious lead time and guaranteeing top-notch wheel quality, as well as a longer expected lifetime. If needed by the customer we can supply a template Kit for dimensional control.
Carefully manufactured for top-tier efficiency, our Kaplan blades are all made from a single steel block. Our Turbines are closely examined and double-checked during every single step of production, from raw material to finished product; their quality is backed by our 3D dimensional control procedures.
Depending on the situation, our Kaplan blades can be surface coated (ex: Tungsten carbide) to further increase the toughness of parts most effected by wear.
In case of air or rail shipment, we provide special anti-rust packaging to avoid turbine oxidation. Elledi produces Kaplan blades designed for maximum power output, which can then be attached to an existing hub
As of today, we have a portfolio of more than 200 Kaplan blades produced.

GUARANTEED QUALITY
NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING
Every turbine manufactured undergoes NDT testing: a series of tests to check a products’ structural integrity, welding defects and surface cracks.
DYNAMIC AND STATIC BALANCING
Turbine’s balance is essential, and it must be tested still and in motion to point out asymmetries and undistributed weight that might stress the bearing, thus increasing the wheel’s expected lifespan.
FINISHES
WELDING
High quality welding is performed by our skilled and experienced operators.
THERMAL TREATMENT
Should the project require it, thermal treatment is carried out by our external partners.
POLISHING
The CNC-worked surfaces are flattened and refined through manual polishing.
